AN INTRODUCTION

The word yoga is often associated with some sort of exercise with strange poses. One leg stretches upwards and the hand goes behind to hold the leg… Imagine that!

Fortunately, yoga is not just about odd poses or breathing. It is not about staring at candles and breathing incense or for flexible young people just to lie around relaxing either. Anyone, irrespective of body type, age, experience or physical abilities can practice yoga. It is not merely a form of exercise. It is much more than just that. It is a way of life that helps you to maintain a fine balance in your life.

Yog or yoga comes from Sanskrit and it means "union" or "merger". And the purpose of it is to achieve a balance between the mind, the body and the soul. Yoga is more than postures. Asans or postures are only a part of the 8 limbs or the Asthanga of the yogic path as laid down by Patanjali about 2000 years ago.
